4 Firearms I am thinking of getting - Not sure about the last one yet
-Marlin Lever Action in Caliber 357 Mag. / 38 Spl; Capacity 9-shot tubular magazine
-Revolver in .357 Mag. Struggling to choose between short barrel with shrouded hammer for concealed carry, or a more normal barrel length. My thinking is that I'll end up getting a shrouded snubby in .357 for carrying first, and then eventually get some cowboy revolvers to match the above marlin. I want a 4" or 6" barrel, but I'm afraid that I won't carry it. I also love the 7-round capacity of the S&W 586 model. But again, I am looking for an EDC gun - and I am not sure how practically I can conceal the larger weapon. http://www.impactguns.com/store/media/marlin_1894C.jpg http://guns4u.info/wp-content/upload...3072_large.jpg http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/a...2&d=1238546978 ----- That covers handgun calibur. I am also looking to purchase a rifle that I can make shots with at over 300 yards or more. I am looking into .300 Winchester Mag. But I just have no idea. |

http://www.galleryofguns.com/Genie/D...No+Sights&pid= They have had this rifle on sale for a while now, available locally for $610.00 plus tax. I probably would have gotten one but like you I have no idea... I would also like to get one of those .380 pocket pistols, I have been carrying an XD40 and it like carrying an anchor... |

I would agree with picking up the .357 mag... Go for the snub nose 2". Or if you can find someone selling a Dan Wesson Pistol Pack with all of the interchangeable barrels that would be nice. I love my semi-autos but each gun has it's own use.. Remember that a revolver is not going to throw your brass all over the place so you have to hunt it down and pick it up.

If you can find an Old Style Ruger Vaquero 357 get it! They are accurate and fun to shoot! |

Beautiful Rifles, I like what looks like the triangular barrel on the Remington, and there was always something attractive about those Egyptian Rifles : )
I'd like to practice long-distance marksmanship. That's why I want a big rifle. For everything else shorter distance stuff like in my OP is okay. |

I am a bit worried about the shorter barrel with the .357 magnum. I am afraid it will not be accurate enough : ( Decisions, decisions! |

Mr. Dragon,
Your mention of the Hakim caused several of my few still functioning neurons to fire off and dredge up the memory of this post. Hope it is of use to you: Hakim |
Re: 4 Firearms I am thinking of getting - Not sure about the last one yet
I like your choices, go for the short barreled and shrouded revolver. The Ruger SP101 is a good choice too.

Re: 4 Firearms I am thinking of getting - Not sure about the last one yet
They're both .357 Magnum which is what makes it so appealing...I can take both the rifle and handgun while camping, and carry the handgun if I have to go into the city.
I am thinking I will go snubby/shrouded first, like everyone is suggesting. Then later I can acquire the Vaqueros or comprable. Then I'll have loads of guns firing .357 magnum OR .38 special! Sounds good to me. A NAA .22LR revolver is also looking pretty attractive since everybody and their mother already has loads of the ammo on hand. A 2ndary gun http://www.snubnose.info/images/NAA_and_coins_350.jpg It is so tiny! Those are only quarters. |
Re: 4 Firearms I am thinking of getting - Not sure about the last one yet
Trust me, the 2" will work just great. Add a 4" and you will be happy. And you will love the lever action. It's a great companion piece. Consider a .357 derringer as a 'back up'.
Plus consider a couple others. A 12 gauge shotgun (or a 20 gauge). And some kind of longer distance rifle. Though, there are several possibles. I love the Remington 700 in .308 - I own one in BDL Heavy Barrel. Love it. It just depends on what you are looking for. There are several choices and you need to consider what you are going to try and accomplish with your long distance rifle. http://www.goldismoney.info/forums/a...1&d=1238817007 Below are a Dan Wesson 6", a Taurus 4", a pair of 2" and don't forget the speed loaders. |

On a good note, I put in an order for multiple boxes of the Hornady critical defense 380 to carry at multiple outlets and it looks like they are all going to ship to me...LOL. 380 or 30 carbine--good luck. I honest think all the components/lines to make these rounds are being devoted to 9 mm and 5.56 instead. |
Re: 4 Firearms I am thinking of getting - Not sure about the last one yet
Oh...and I also have a 357 Marlin carbine lever and a 357 S&W model 60. I like them both. Another good thing is they look less evil (which you alluded to) and in the event of another AWB, I figure (crosses fingers and knocks on wood) that these guns will make the cut.

I own them, I think they serve their purpose well ..... BUT, they are not fun to shoot. You will not enjoy shooting it - and as a result, you will not practice enough with it. If your concern is 'accuracy' (you stated in another post) keep that in mind. It will be a bit of a chore to force yourself to practice with it. I say that based on a long experience of owning snubbies. Moreover, nearly everyone I've ever talked to that owns them concurs that they are not really that fun to shoot. Recoil will be an issue, muzzle flash, and hand fatigue on anything more than 20 rounds all become an issue. That said, I'm not at all against them. There is simply no better 'small form' of protection in my opinion. They are a necessity in certain situations (the ability to stick it in your pocket while dressed in your summer clothes is the key). But, as I said don't imagine that you will be at the range every week practicing with it. |

Re: 4 Firearms I am thinking of getting - Not sure about the last one yet
I don't know your rifle experience level but unless it's very high, I'd stay away from 300 Win Mag. It kicks, hard. Unless you are used to that sort of thing you very well could develop a world-class-accuracy-destroying flinch. A 308 does the job very well out well past any range you are likely to shoot.
For long range accuracy at the best price, I am very partial to Savage bolt guns, they have been dominant in factory stock competitions for years. For some interesting reading, go to this rifle competition site for a discussion thread on Savages Vs the rest of the world. Edit: I just read the entire 7-page thread on the Savage, great reading. There was one guy consistently bad mouthing everything, you know the type. He got called out for a 2 person competition for $1,000 cash. He hasn't been seen on the site since. Unlike GIM, a large number of the posters on that site know each other so the competition offer was real. |
Re: 4 Firearms I am thinking of getting - Not sure about the last one yet
Free Texas, Wallew, Tom D, and everyone else who helped me in this thread, it is really appreciated. I am going to go for the Savage for my long distance rifle, as well as following the suggestions above. Becoming armed is a wonderful feeling, by the way.
This is my step into a larger world - up until now I've been a 1 rifle, 1 handgun, 1 shotgun kind of guy. Thanks everyone! http://www.gunblast.com/images/Savag...2/MVC-006F.jpg http://www.gunblast.com/images/Savag...2/MVC-001F.jpg http://www.gunblast.com/images/Savag...2/MVC-012F.jpg The internet just cannot say enough good things about the Savage 10FP-LE2. I am going to research further models, but I am sold on the brand. |

Re: 4 Firearms I am thinking of getting - Not sure about the last one yet
TA,
Dang man, I thought you knew. A GOOD EXAMPLE of a Dan Wesson Pistol Pack in .357 is running roughly $1000. Here is an example for sale for $1100 for one on Guns America. http://www.gunsamerica.com/900895895...ck_357_Mag.htm# When they sold new, they sold for $799. And that was back in the 80's (which is when I bought my 6" DW, which I love). So finding one for this kind of price is actually kind of a steal. Realize that you are getting one frame with four barrels. |
